The trembling slowed. He altered the next pathway. A pulse traveled through the hips and struck the heart. The organ fluttered, paused, then beat hard against the ribs. Ha Tu placed one hand over the chest.
“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑖𝑠 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑚𝑒.”
The heart faltered again. He lowered the frequency until its rhythm steadied.
“𝐼 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝐼 𝑎𝑚 𝑑𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑔.”
Ha Tu continued upward through the body. Each change affected the whole. An adjustment near the spine altered the rhythm of the heart. A change in the chest disturbed the passages of the throat. Nothing within the form existed separately. The body was a single pattern.
Ha Tu moved his hands over the lungs. They waited beneath the ribs, empty and untested.
“𝐵𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡ℎ 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑏𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡 𝑑𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑑.”
He traced the pathways surrounding them, shaping a rhythm into the tissue.
“𝑅𝑒𝑐𝑒𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑔.”
“𝑅𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔.”
“𝐸𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔.”
“𝑅𝑒𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔.”
“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑟𝑒𝑡ℎ 𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑐𝑖𝑜𝑢𝑠𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡.”
The lungs tightened as if trying to draw air before the body had awakened. Its mouth opened, then closed. Ha Tu held the vibration steady.
“𝑇ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ 𝑏𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡ℎ, 𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒.”
The lungs relaxed. He lifted his hands toward the skull. Here lay the greatest weakness.
The physical brain had been shaped to protect the animal form. It recognized danger, directed movement, and responded to hunger and pain. It could learn, remember, and imagine, yet its awareness remained bound to the needs of the body. It was not capable of holding the consciousness Ha Tu intended to bring into it. He placed his hands on either side of the unfinished head.
“𝐴𝑙𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑏𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑑𝑒 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑙 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚.”
The bones appeared beneath his touch, their lines glowing pale gold.
“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑜𝑏𝑒 𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑏𝑒 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑑.”
Ha Tu pressed outward with his awareness. The structure resisted. Bone shifted slowly. Tissue divided and joined. New pathways stretched between instinct, memory, imagination, and thought.
The body convulsed. Ha Tu tightened his hold.
“𝑅𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑙𝑙.”
Its back arched from the platform.
“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑛 𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑡 ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑑.”
The cranial structure widened another measure. The new pathways trembled, threatening to collapse. Ha Tu closed his eyes and sent a steady tone through them.
“𝑌𝑜𝑢 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑖𝑛.”
The body settled. Inside the expanded frontal lobe, a chamber had opened. It was not meant to hold an organ or a physical object. The cranial chamber itself would become the vessel. The Vessel of the Sun.
It would contain the light of origin within physical awareness. Through it, consciousness would enter flesh without surrendering the knowledge of what it was. Ha Tu slowly removed his hands.
“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑣𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑙.”
The crystal walls surrounding him brightened.
“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑉𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑙 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑆𝑢𝑛 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑑 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒.”
A current rose from the base of the spine. It moved through the body, crossed the heart, and entered the expanded cranial chamber. Light appeared behind the closed eyes. Ha Tu stepped back.
“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑝𝑎𝑡ℎ𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑔𝑛𝑒𝑑.”
He watched the chest.
“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑢𝑛𝑔𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑑.”
He placed one hand above the heart.
“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑟ℎ𝑦𝑡ℎ𝑚 𝑖𝑠 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒.”
He studied the light gathering inside the skull.
“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑉𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑙 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑆𝑢𝑛 𝑖𝑠 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑦.”
Something brushed the edge of his awareness. Ha Tu turned. The chamber stood empty except for the form resting upon the platform. Beyond the curved walls lay the sleeping city, the sea, and the darkness of the physical world.
The movement came again. It did not belong to Atlantis. Ha Tu moved toward the wall and placed his hand upon the crystal.
The surface trembled beneath him. Beyond the chamber, countless consciousnesses crowded against the boundary of the physical realm. Their presence infused the essence of Earth like a hidden backdrop to creation. Recently, Ha Tu had sensed them more clearly.
Now their longing filled the chamber. Their cries carried no language, yet he understood them.
“𝐿𝑒𝑡 𝑢𝑠 𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟.”
“𝐿𝑒𝑡 𝑢𝑠 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑙.”
“𝐿𝑒𝑡 𝑢𝑠 𝑙𝑖𝑣𝑒.”
They wanted warmth against skin. The taste of water. The pressure of earth beneath their feet. The sound of another voice. The touch of one living form against another. Ha Tu leaned closer to the crystal.
“𝑅𝑒𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑙𝑦, 𝐼 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒.”
The waiting consciousnesses surged toward him.
“𝑌𝑜𝑢 𝑖𝑛𝑓𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑝ℎ𝑦𝑠𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑚.”
Their longing passed through the chamber in a great wave.
“𝑌𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑘𝑜𝑛.”
He turned toward the unfinished body. Its altered skull glowed softly. The spinal current remained steady. The form waited between life and stillness.
“𝑇ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚 𝐼 𝑎𝑚 𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔.”
The consciousnesses pressed nearer. The curved walls brightened beneath the force of their desire. Ha Tu returned to the platform and examined the body again. He tested each pathway from the spine to the heart, then followed the current into the expanded cranial chamber.
Nothing weakened. Nothing shifted. He rested one hand over the chest.
“𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦, 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑘 𝑖𝑠 𝑠𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑.”
The heart beat beneath him. He placed the other hand against the forehead.
“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑔𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑖𝑠 ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑒.”
The chamber answered with a deep, harmonious tone. Ha Tu had not intended to enter the form completely. He would anchor only a portion of his awareness within the Vessel of the Sun. The greater part of him would remain joined to his point of origin. He would awaken the body.
He would experience the senses. Then he would withdraw. Ha Tu lowered his face near the unfinished form.
“𝑌𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑦.”
A warning moved through his memory.
“𝐷𝑜 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑓.”
He paused. The waiting consciousnesses crowded the boundary. Another voice followed.
“𝑆𝑒𝑛𝑑 𝑜𝑛𝑙𝑦 𝑎 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠.”
“𝑇ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝐼 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑑𝑜.”
The words echoed through the crystal chamber. Ha Tu placed his awareness at the base of the spine. Matter resisted him.
The body possessed weight and density unlike anything in the realm from which he had come. Its patterns moved slowly compared with thought. The nearer he drew, the more his awareness narrowed. He stopped at the edge of the form. The elder’s voice returned.
“𝑇𝑜 𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑔𝑒𝑡.”
“𝐼 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟.”
Ha Tu entered through the lowest pathway. Pressure closed around him. The nerves awakened at once, carrying hundreds of signals toward the brain. He felt the folded limbs, the pull of the muscles, and the cool air resting against the skin.
The sensations were faint, but each demanded recognition. Ha Tu continued upward. The heart struck against the chest.
He recoiled.
“𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑐𝑒.”
The heartbeat came again, louder than the first. Ha Tu steadied his awareness and moved through the chest. The lungs tightened beneath him. The throat contracted. The muscles of the face twitched without his command.
“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑜𝑑𝑦 𝑖𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑠𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑡.”
Every portion of it spoke at once. Pressure. Temperature. Movement. Need. Ha Tu followed the current into the neck.
The senses began opening around him. He felt the room through the skin before the eyes had seen it. He heard the crystal walls through unopened ears. He tasted the moisture gathering inside the mouth. The form was not merely receiving him.
It was surrounding him. A warning moved along the fading pathway behind him. Matter does not simply receive consciousness. It surrounds it.
Ha Tu pushed forward.
“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑘 𝑖𝑠 𝑠𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑.”
He reached the skull. The expanded cranial chamber opened to receive him. Ha Tu entered the Vessel of the Sun.
For one perfect moment, he existed in both states. He felt the body without being confined by it. He sensed the physical chamber through the unfinished ears. He felt the cold air against the skin and the pulse of the heart beneath the ribs. Behind it all remained the Source.
The connection stretched outward, beyond the body, beyond Atlantis, and beyond Earth. Ha Tu opened the form’s awareness.
“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑘 𝑖𝑠 ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔.”
The fingers curled.
“𝐼 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑙 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑜𝑑𝑦.”
The heart beat.
“𝐼 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑙 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑆𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑐𝑒.”
Joy moved through him.
“𝐼 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑑𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑖𝑡.”
The waiting consciousnesses rushed toward the open pathway. Their longing struck the link with a force Ha Tu had not anticipated. The crystal walls flared white.
The body arched upon the platform. Ha Tu twisted toward the point of origin.
“𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡?”
Another wave struck. The spinal current surged upward, carrying too much force into the altered brain. The Vessel of the Sun shook around him. Ha Tu reached backward.
The pathway had narrowed.
“𝑁𝑜.”
The heart lost its rhythm. Ha Tu pushed toward the closing connection.
“𝑅𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑛.”
The physical senses awakened completely. Sound entered first. The hum of the crystal chamber crashed through the ears as a violent, meaningless roar. Ha Tu tried to withdraw from it, but there was nowhere inside the form where sound could not reach him.
